Description

RELIANCE (Arkansas 1163)

(Hybrid: contains Vitis Labrusca, Vitis Vinifera)

Non hardy variety in Quebec* (requires winter protection)

RED SEEDLESS** TABLE GRAPE

  • Medium size and spherical seedless berries with a melting texture and a thin skin (with sometimes uneven coloring)
  • Great lychee and/or pink grapefruit flavor, with a delicate aroma of Labrusca
  • Slipskin
  • Medium to large size clusters well filled but rather loose
  • Hardiness Zone: 5b
  • Has already survived (and fruited well) at temperatures of -33 °C at Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin (USA)
  • Ripens mid-season
  • Productive
  • Medium vigorous vine
  • Resistant to diseases such as anthracnose and moderately resistant to fungal diseases. Could require an anti fungal treatment for successful production.
  • Ideal to eat fresh and make raisins
  • Self-fertile grape variety

** Although recognized as a seedless variety, like any seedless variety, seeds might occasionally appear in years when the vine has been “stressed”

ORIGIN:

  • Bred by James N. Moore for the University of Arkansas Hybridization Program
  • Cross: Ontario (flower) X Suffolk Red (pollen)
  • Cross made in 1964
  • Selected in 1967
  • Released in 1983
  • Origin: Fayetteville, Arkansas (USA)

Anecdote:

James N. Moore (who made the cross and bred Reliance) often called Reliance “the Will Rogers grape” (named after the famous American actor that ALL THE WORLD loved in the US); because he has never met anyone who did not like the flavor and quality of Reliance!

The name “Reliance” was chosen due to its hardiness.

*WARNING! This grape variety is not hardy in regions which hardiness zone is under 5 (ex: 4, 3 etc…). Therefore it is imperative to protect the vine in winter (Ex: Cover with geotextile …)
