SWENSON RED (E.S. 439)

(Hybrid: contains Vitis Labrusca, Vitis Riparia)

Non hardy variety in Quebec* (requires winter protection)

RED SEEDED TABLE GRAPE

  • Unique rich and fruity -but non Labrusca- flavor
  • Large round berries, firm and meaty with thin and edible non slipskin
  • Medium conical clusters, slightly loose to very compact
  • Ripens mid season
  • Hardiness zone: 5a (-25 ° C)
  • Vine vigorous
  • Very good conservation
  • Perfect table grape to consume fresh but also suitable for wine
  • Self-fertile grape variety

ORIGIN:

  • Bred by Elmer Swenson
  • Cross: MN78 (flower) X Seibel 11803 (pollen)
  • Cross made in 1962
  • Selected in 1967
  • Released by E. Swenson and the University of Minnesota in 1978
  • Origin: Osceola, Wisconsin (USA)

Anecdote:

Swenson Red, Trollhaugen and Petite Jewel – 3 grape varieties offered by Vignes Chez Soi – are “half-sisters” on their mom’s side!

In fact, the three varieties have the same maternal ascendant MN78 (flower) fertilized, in the case of Swenson Red, by the pollen of “dad” Seibel 11803.

WARNING! This grape variety is not hardy in regions which hardiness zone is under 5 (ex: 4, 3 etc…). Therefore it is imperative to protect the vine in winter (Ex: Cover with geotextile …)
