TROLLHAUGEN (E.S. 3-24-7)

(Hybrid: contains Vitis Labrusca, Vitis Riparia)

BLUE SEEDLESS TABLE GRAPE

  • Sweet and mild Concord-like flavor
  • Delicious very sweet slipskin berries
  • Berries are small to medium size
  • Skin is thin
  • Small cylindrical and compact clusters
  • Hardy to -32⁰C
  • Zoned 4b for hardiness
  • Very resistant to winter cold, without any protection
  • Ripens early
  • Harvested in September
  • Very vigorous wine (ideal to cover fences or pergolas)
  • More disease-resistant than Montreal Blues
  • Equivalent of Ontario Concord but with thinner skin and seedless
  • Self-fertile grape variety

ORIGIN:

  • Bred by Elmer Swenson
  • Cross between MN 78 (flower) and Venus (pollen)
  • Selected in 1985
  • Released in 2000
  • Developed by E. Swenson; named by David Mc Gregor (vine growing pioneer, 1st winemaker to market wine in Minnesota)
  • Origin: Osceola, Wisconsin (USA)

Anecdote:

Trollhaugen, Swenson Red and Petite Jewel – 3 grape varieties offered by Vignes Chez Soi – are “half-sisters” on their mom’s side!

In fact, all three varieties have the same maternal ascendant, the MN78 (flower), fertilized in the case of Trollhaugen by the pollen of its “dad” Venus.
